M E C A M , the Merian Centre for Advanced Studies in the Maghreb, is a research center affiliated with the University of Tunis, established in 2020 and located on the campus of the Institute of Digital Engineering of Tunis. Its mission is to help researchers and professors from around the world benefit from a research fellowship in Tunisia lasting from 3 to 8 months, funded by the German government. Each year, about ten “Fellows” stay in Tunis and work in the MECAM facilities and at the National Library of Tunis. These scholarships are also available to professors from the University of Tunis and other Tunisian universities who submit a research project.
The uniqueness of this collaboration lies in the fact that all publications, whether from international or Tunisian researchers, are counted as articles of the University of Tunis.
Tunisian researchers are given priority. Any researcher in economics and social sciences, literature and arts, management sciences, heritage, or anthropology can become a Fellow of MECAM by contacting the center.
MECAM also supports student and teacher mobility projects through ERASMUS scholarships, allowing them to complete a scientific stay or internship at the University of Marburg.
Projects are currently being developed so that students from all our institutions can benefit from internships at the University of Marburg.
Calls for applications to participate in workshops are regularly posted on the MECAM website to encourage research in political and economic sciences, art, and humanities within MECAM. Calls for contributions to international conferences are also regularly published on their website. One major advantage is that researchers’ travel expenses are covered by MECAM.
Other calls for applications aimed at Tunisian university professors or postdoctoral researchers are shared by other Merian Centres around the world, to promote the mobility of teachers and researchers from the University of Tunis to countries such as Ghana (University of Ghana campus), Brazil, Mexico, and India. These exchanges reflect a shared commitment to strengthening South-South-North cooperation.
